Saturday, May 5: The SES Foundation Auction

The SES Foundation Auction is coming up May 5 at Beeswing, and we need some love from all of you. In addition to purchasing tickets and attending the festivities, we are looking for donations. I know that all of you know cool and creative people, or work for a company who could donate product, or are friendly with a local brewer … just to list a few examples of how you can help. Please ask your contacts if they would be willing to donate goods or services to the auction.

The SES Foundation Auction is a fundraiser for the SES Foundation, which supports hiring staff for our fair school. In the current budget era we need the foundation more than ever to help us fund some of the amazing extra staff we are so fortunate to have.

If you have any questions, please contact Corby Watkins. Thank you!

Saturday, February 24, 8-10am: Applebee’s flapjack fundraiser

February 24 is our annual fundraiser flapjack fundraiser, during which sixteen of our 8th graders will be serving breakfast at the Lloyd Center’s Applebee’s (1439 NE Halsey) from 8-10am. We hope you’ll join us for this great experience.

The flapjack event is an important GO Fund Fundraiser (our fund that allows ALL students to participate in field trips and overnights) and it’s a wonderful community event. PLUS, we need you there as our customers so these 8th graders can experience what it is like to be a server, an invaluable experience. In addition to the students, a few teachers will be there making coffee and talking to tables.

Last year we raised around $3000 from this fundraiser for our Go Fund. We’d love to break that record this year! Tickets cost $10 each (pancakes, sausages, scrambled eggs, coffee and juice), and $6 out of every $10 goes directly to SES. Get tickets from MS students.

Important note: PLEASE consider bringing your own coffee cup as Applebee’s otherwise uses single-use Styrofoam cups.

February 26-March 11: SES Read-A-Thon fundraiser

Hello Sunnyside families! Our annual fundraiser, Read-A-Thon, is almost here! We have so many exciting activities planned for the students. Gillian, our wonderful librarian, Leslie Lothamer, other INCREDIBLE parent volunteers and I simply cannot wait to get started. The students will get all of their information packets and bookmarks on February 26. Official reading dates are February 26 through March 11. We plan to have character days at school, the very popular house cup, got caught reading activities and raffles. And this year we will also have a comic book exchange during kickoff on February 26.

Starting immediately, we will have boxes in the library for age appropriate (ages 5-15) comic book and graphic novel donations. We have already asked a few local comic book shops, but if you have any connections to any shops in town, please send me an email. (We would love more donations, but I would like to make sure it is not a shop that is already sponsoring us.)

If you would like to volunteer, please call me at 305-528-7105 or email me at We can always use more hands to make displays, decorate the halls and count money.

Cannot wait for all the fun!

With Gratitude,
Yomari Cruz-DeWeese

Saturday and Sunday, January 6-7: SES tree recycling

Please support our annual fundraiser to benefit SES’s “Go Fund”. Proceeds ensure that all students, regardless of family resources, can fully participate in school field trips.

Or, for a $10 donation, schedule a pickup using the form below, and our drivers will come get your tree while you relax. Easy ways to support SES (without spending a dime)

As we gear up for holiday shopping, I want to remind you of a few opportunities we have to give back to SES without spending a single extra dime. Easy money! Though the individual amounts seem small, they add up to a great deal for our sweet school.

Fred Meyer Community Rewards allows you to pick an organization to which they donate a percentage of all you spend. Follow this link and sign up if you haven’t already. Type in Sunnyside Environmental. You can choose the PTSA or the school account. Either one helps the school.

Amazon Smile also allows you to pick a non-profit to benefit from your shopping prowess. Visit the Amazon Smile page to get set up. Once you choose your charity (Sunnyside Environmental School), you won’t have to remember to do it again. You can even see how much your shopping has given back to SES on the home page. This is a great one for out-of-town family because they can give to SES when they shop at amazon as well. The only think you need to remember is to shop through Amazon Smile and not—regular purchases do not count toward Smile and thus no money to SES. Sad!

Powell’s also has a rewards program. If you click this link to get to Powell’s (using SES’s partner ID, 34798), they will donate a portion of each sale to SES.

Office Depot will donate 5% of any qualifying purchase back to SES. If you shop at the local Office Depot (323 SE MLK Boulevard), you can just ask them to apply the 5% Back to Schools to Sunnyside Environmental School. If you are shopping at another Office Depot, online or over the phone (1-800-GO-DEPOT), you can use the School ID 70084282.

Gift Cards! There is a wide variety of gift cards for you to peruse at the gift card table on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Gift cards are great for your shopping experience and they make amazing stocking stuffers. Just sayin’.

The Giving Tree is up in the main hall again this year. Though it doesn’t bring money into the coffers of the PTSA or the school, it supports our community at its foundation. Learn more about this program here.

Thanks for all that you do for the school. Every little bit helps!

Do you work for a company that supports matching gifts?

As you make plans for your Back to School Request to SES, did you know that many companies will match your gift? Some even double or triple your donation. All at no cost to you!

If you work at or are retired from one of the companies below, please consider a matching gift to the SES PTSA this year.

How do you do this? Ask your human resources office for a Matching Gift form. Fill it out and send it to SES PTSA, 3421 SE Salmon St. Portland, OR, or email to

View a list of local companies with matching gift programs here.
