Friday, June 1, 3:15-6:30pm: Silent Disco fundraiser

Heartbeat Silent Disco will partner with Sunnyside Environmental School on Friday, June 1 from 3:30 to 6:30pm for a fundraiser dance behind the school. Bring your friends, your family, snacks and a blanket and come dance under the sun with us.

Silent Discos are more fun when we have critical mass. Let’s get together around 3:15pm to stretch and guarantee you headphones. We are going to kick things off around 3:30pm and go til around 6:30pm. We will bring a bunch of headphones, but get there early to guarantee yourself a pair. You must have a valid driver’s license or ID and $5 to participate. This is a family-friendly event.

We hope you can join us as we raise FUNds and awareness for Sunnyside Environmental School. $5-$20 donation goes to SES PTSA.

Thursday, June 7, 8:45-9:45am: Room Parent appreciation and information coffee hour

Are you someone who loves to stay informed of all the happenings at school? Do you thrive when able to connect others and build community? Have you been looking for the right way to contribute to the SES community that fits into your own timeframe? Being a Room Parent might be a great fit! This role is vital to the classroom community and serves to support the teachers in an important way.

Please join the current and incoming Room Parent Coordinators, Justine Light and Jessica Oskin, respectively, along with current, seasoned Room Parents for coffee, treats and information about the Room Parent Role. We will meet in the library after drop off on Thursday, June 7. This is a great time to find out more about the job and ask for valuable first-hand experience and tips from others who have done the work. If you are unable to make the event but are still interested, please email justinelight@gmail.comfor more info or to put your name on the roster of possible Room Parents for 2018-19 school year. Your interest does not mean commitment at this point, so come on by!

A bittersweet announcement from Principal Amy

It is with mixed emotions that I write this email. After 33 years as a teacher, Dian Christensen, our beloved PE teacher, has made the difficult decision to retire at the end of this school year.  It’s impossible to capture the depths of my own emotions about this, especially in an email. I love and adore Dian—she’s my friend, my colleague, my mentor, and I am so fortunate to have her in my life. I know that many of you—and many of your children—feel the same way.

We are planning a school surprise for Dian, with more information to come about this in the next few days. In the meantime, please see the attached letter…written by Dian to the community at large

Please don’t hesitate to show Dian lots of love in the coming weeks. I know that Sunnyside holds a huge space in her heart…

Community Tastes Celebration

The Community Tastes Celebration (formerly the Iron Chef Competition) is an exciting new event this year, which focuses our learning on cooking food that is locally-sourced, celebrates diverse cultures, highlights tastes of the season, uses what we’ve got (N0 waste) and serves as comfort food for all types of diets.

The week of the event, kids cook in small groups with Steph and adult volunteers (like you!). The event takes place Monday, June 4 through Thursday, June 7 at various times throughout the day.

The event finale (tastings and presentations by cooking teams) takes place in core classes on Thursday, June 7,  from 2-3:15pm.

We need volunteers for the dates listed above; if you participate, you get to taste and celebrate! To schedule, sign up here or contact Steph or your children’s core teachers.
