Friday, August 21: Back-to-school exchange [updated]
- Drop off: Thursday, August 20, 6-9pm and Friday, August 21, 8am-noon. Get a free entry ticket when dropping off items.
- Community Swap: Friday, August 21, noon-7pm. $2 per family if bringing in items to share as you arrive.
The Back-to-School Clothing Exchange is a Sunnyside Environmental School event open to all. Families need not have a child attending SES to participate. Share the Facebook event page to with your friends; the more people participating, the better the swap.
These items are accepted at and available at the swap:
- Kids’ and adult clothing and shoes
- Sports gear
- Books
- Backpacks and lunch boxes
- School supplies
- Toys
NOT ACCEPTED: furniture and general household goods.
Every family is asked to donate as much or more than they take home, leaving donations at the end of the swap to share with families in need. Clothing items that remain at the end of the day are bagged up for the Portland Public School’s PTA Clothing Center, which clothes Portland school children all year long. Families that need more than they have to bring in for trade can take what ever they need in the last hour of the swap for themselves, friends, family or a favorite charity organization.
Everyone who brings in items in advance, on Thursday night or Friday morning will get a free ticket to come back in for the swap. Everyone who comes during the noon-7pm swap event without donating in advance must have items with them to share and pay a $2 per family entry fee.
Adult and kids’ clothing comes in throughout the swap; while it’s great to be there at the beginning when volunteers have organized the tables by gender and size, there is always a great selection throughout the day.
If you love to help set up these kind of events and keep them running well while you find great things for your own family, visit the SignUpGenius page and pick out a volunteer slot or two.
