A Sunnyside Environmental School PTSA Holiday Fundraiser

The SES Wreath and Poinsettia Sale is a school-wide fundraiser that benefits our entire community. This year our wreath sale will support Sunnyside AND Mujeres Luchadoras Progresistas (Women Striving for Progress). Mujeres Luchadoras Progresistas (MLP) is a group of farm worker women who create economic development and promote leadership among women in their community. They recognize that women overcome exploitation and injustice when they organize and reclaim their rights. By purchasing our wreaths from MLP we can support these efforts.

Their wreath project has made a substantial difference in the lives of farm worker women and their families. Since 1992 MLP has been able to provide part-time employment during the three month holiday season to over 170 farm worker women. The holiday season is the time of the year with the least amount of farm work available and a time when families struggle most to pay the rent and provide for their families.

The money that women earn through the wreath project goes towards their family’s household expenses: rent, utilities, holiday expenses, warm clothing, and food. So, wreaths cost a little bit more this year, and Sunnyside may make a little less money, but in the long run so much more is gained. This decision allows Sunnyside to exercise what we try to teach our kids, and illustrate what we can accomplish as a community.
