Dear Students, Families and Staff:

I wanted to reach out to assure you that actions this week by the federal government to reduce protections for transgender students does not change or diminish our commitment to upholding clear PPS policies and guidelines that prohibit discrimination based on gender identity or expression.

The federal action also does not override Oregon state law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity.

The direction from the federal government is not the direction we will take at PPS. It does not reflect our values and it will not change our continued support for students to use restrooms and locker rooms associated with their preferred gender identity.

We each have a role in ensuring that all students, including those who are transgender, can learn and succeed in school without fear of bullying, harassment or isolation. If you suspect or witness any behavior that runs counter to our values of equity and inclusion for all, please report it immediately to a school leader or to the central office.

And if you encounter students or families who may need additional support during this time please reach out to your school leadership and counselor or contact PPS Student Services at 503-916-5460.

For families and students seeking more information, below are links to policies that support our transgender and gender diverse students:

This has been an upsetting and unsettling time for many in our community. We are fortunate to have a community of schools that embraces diversity and inclusion and rejects prejudice and discrimination.

Thank you for your support of our schools and all of our students.

Sincerely,
Bob Mckean
Interim PPS Superintendent
