Thursday, May 25, 9:30am and 6:30pm: 3rd grade musical
Please join us for our very first, Sunnyside-created 3rd grade musical this Thursday, May 25, at 9:30 am or 6:30 pm. This year’s third graders collaborated with local artists Jana and Mic Crenshaw to write songs and create scenes that are intended to explain various events in Portland’s history, by telling stories from multiple perspectives. The students have worked hard to learn narratives from our city’s history that are often ignored in traditional, dominant culture history books or curricular materials. Together with their teachers and these artists, they’ve created an original musical that asks the audience to consider the following questions:
- What is history?
- Who is telling the story?
- Whose voice is missing?
- Who is getting the glory?
The entire 3rd grade community has put in an extensive amount of time to create this original piece (co-creating a musical from scratch is HARD WORK!!). Both performances are open to SES families, regardless of your child’s grade level. Students who are at school on Thursday will attend the 9:30 am performance; we will be recording the show for 5th grade and middle school who are out of the building that day. Please come if you’re able.
