2020 Read-A-Thon!

Our annual fundraiser, Read-A-Thon, is here! The official reading days are from February 18-March 2. SES students received all of their information packets and bookmarks on February 18.

To make a pledge click here.

We have lots of amazing prizes for top fundraisers and top readers, plus TONS of exciting activities planned for the students. Here is the list:

  • Tuesday, February 18: Read-A-Thon kick-off
Author and illustrator of the Peter & Ernesto books, Graham Annable, will give a presentation to our students and sign books.
  • Friday, February 21: Pajama Read-in Event
Wear pajamas to school and spend recess reading in the auditorium.
  • Monday, March 2: FINAL READING DAY, and the wildly popular dress like a book character day.

We’ll also have ongoing events and reading prizes throughout Read-A-Thon, including: House Cup, Got Caught Reading and Locker Library.

A very important reminder: We measure reading for this event in UNITS, NOT MINUTES.

  • Grades K-2: 10 minutes of reading = 1 unit
  • Grades 3-8: 20 minutes of reading = 1 unit

Please feel free to contact me with questions at leslielothamer@gmail.com.

Ready, set, read!

Cheers,

SES PTSA Newsletter 09-15-2022

Good afternoon, Sunnyside Families and Friends! 🌻 😎 🌞 ☀ 🕶

THANK YOU to the dozens of amazing parents and teachers who joined us for the first PTSA meeting last week! We are beyond thrilled to have so many people ready to roll up their sleeves with us this year! If you couldn’t join us, no worries, this weekly newsletter will be a great way to stay connected! Our first big volunteer need is with Harvest Fair, coming up at the end of next month!

Volunteers Needed to Help Sell Pies! (NEW!) 🎂 🍰

Do you like pie? Want to help raise money for Sunnyside? Our fourth annual pie sale is coming up and we need help putting up flyers, staffing our table at the Harvest Fair, and distributing pies on November 16th. Anyone who is interested please contact Valerie Kahn at vdutton.

Wanted: Classroom Family Representatives / Room Parents 💌 👂 🍪

We still need volunteers for Art, Gardening, and P.E. and for MaryGage’s classroom.

I’m Emily Lillywhite, fellow SES grown-up and this year’s Classroom Family Coordinator. Each year, we ask that two adults fill the role of Classroom Family Representative for each class. Typical duties of this shared role include: Creating and sharing classroom families contact information, sending a simple weekly email communicating classroom goings-on, liaising with teachers to make sure they have enough family support for class activities, etc. It’s an easy way to get to know both your kiddo’s teacher and classroom community better. Please reach out if you’re interested or have any questions: emilylillywhite. And know that all the teachers & the community at large will super appreciate it. Thanks!!

SES Harvest Fair is Saturday, October 22!! 🎃 🍂

Mark your calendar now for Harvest Fair! Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Free entry, carnival tickets sold in advance and day-of. ALL are welcome to attend. You can look forward to games and activities galore, fresh apple cider, sausages from Franks-A-Lot, a Seed Exchange, the famous Cookie Palace, and a community meal courtesy of Bamboo Grove Hawaiian Grille. It’s going to be magical.

We need new families to step up and take on the following projects: Dunk Tank, Apple Cider Press, Community Meal, and the Baked Goodie Boogie. Kindergarten, Third, Fourth and Fifth grades all have special roles to play, too. Learn more about the key roles and SIGN UP HERE.

Want to get involved? Unsure but excited? New ideas? Contact Steph Barnhart at stephbarnhart1.

Truck Needed!
Do you have a flatbed truck 🚚 and could help us pick up some equipment on 10/22? Do you know a bluegrass jam band? Other ideas? Contact Steph Barnhart at stephbarnhart1. Full volunteer sign-up will be available 9/23! Stay tuned for more!

Merch Fundraiser brought in over $2400!! 👕 👚 🤑
Our merch campaign just concluded and we raised $768 and made sure that there are a bunch of cuties running around campus in SES tees! We started this fundraiser last spring and the total tally for both rounds is $2442! THANK YOU! And if you missed out, we’ll do another round (with new colors and options!) in December!

Sunnyside Bike Bus! 🎒 🏫 🚲 🚴

Let’s bike to school together! On Wednesday, October 12, Sunnyside students and families will ride bikes to school together to celebrate alidacantor.

BACK TO SCHOOL ASK! 💰 💲

Each year EVERY family is asked to contribute $150 per student to go toward the Garden and Sustainability program, Administrative Academic Support, Music and Art Specials, Scholarships, and Field Studies. Our goal is $20,000 and we are more than halfway there! If you aren’t able to contribute $150 at this time, we invite you to pay whatever makes sense for you or pay incrementally. And if you can offer more, please do! Back to School Ask here.

Go Bowling in September, Earn Cash for SES 🎳 💵

NEXT PTSA MEETING! 👬 🤓 🙂

October 7 @ 8:45am! We will have coffee ☕ again from Oblique roasters, plus a chance for some dirty volunteer work following the meeting! We’re seeking six or seven volunteers to help us from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, October 7th to help us clear out space in the basement to prep for Harvest Fair! 🍂 🍁 This is your chance to see some seriously vintage items in the broiler room… 👵 🗝 💺 📚 and it will really help us out! Sunnyside PTSA Weekly Update
Wednesday, September 28, 2022 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻

~ Find the latest Messenger newsletter from the SES office here. ~

Good morning and Happy Wednesday, Sunnyside friends!

🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔

This newsletter is going to be egg-stra 🍳 awesome (and a tad bit longer) because we are taking this moment to honor our beloved Sunnyside chickens. 🐣🐤🐥🐔 As you may know, we have had a bit of a rodent 🐀 problem develop in our chicken coop. 🙀 Our district leaders have requested we remove the chickens from the campus out of caution for the health and safety of students and employees. We too are devastated by the news, and we know how deeply these chickens are loved and cared for by the SES community; but we have made the difficult decision to rehome them to a family farm in Milwaukie. 🏡

Please share the disappointing news with your student, as the chickens are part of what makes Sunnyside so special. 😭 While we will miss them deeply, our wonderful Garden Coordinator, Nathan, 👦 will be reimagining new ways to use the soon-vacant garden space. He is bursting with ideas, and your kids will get to help that vision come to life. 👫 We are planning to commemorate the SES chickens before they make their exit, and we are hoping to plan a fond farewell celebration next week. Details to come soon!

Sincerely,
Dr. Eryn Berg, Principal SES 💕🐔and PTSA Co-Presidents Auburn & Heather 🐥💕

P.S. SAVE THE DATE for Next Friday’s monthly meeting: October 7, 2022 at 8:45 a.m. in Room 102.

Sunnyside PTSA Weekly Update
Wednesday, October 12, 2022

Happy Wednesday, Sunnyside friends! ????

Happy four-day school week (or, good luck this Friday, depending on your perspective)! Either way, shout out to all the parents, teachers, and small important humans who are making magic every day! ???? Keeping this week’s announcements short, but sweet…just like this week!

Our school runs on volunteers! This week we still need your help with the Harvest Fair, pie sales, and finding a venue for our spring gala. Many roles do not require a significant or ongoing time commitment, so please check out the details in the Volunteer Opportunities section below and consider signing up. We promise we are a fun and friendly group and you may even make a new parent bestie while helping support your child’s school. Thank you so much in advance!

We have many fantastic events coming up! The Teacher Support Drive-By is this Saturday – come out and show our amazing SES teachers some love! Bike Bus is going strong, Revel Indoor Cycling is offering you the opportunity to take a spinning class and raise money for SES at the same time, and Eco-School Network is offering a free parent volunteer leadership training. Check out our Events section below for more details!

And finally, a quick moment of somber, clucky ???? silence for our beloved chickens who will depart the SES campus this week. Stop by for one last hello to them before they say farewell and head out on their new journey.

Sincerely,
PTSA Co-Presidents Auburn & Heather

Seeking a Fundraiser Venue for Spring Gala for SES! ????
Sunnyside PTSA is bringing back our big Spring Fundraiser event, and we are seeking a venue that can hold up to 250 people. If you or someone you know might have a lead on a great venue, we’d LOVE to hear from you! We are also soon going to start seeking fabulous auction items from our many SES families. Thank you for considering a donation to a local restaurant, a few nights in a family vacation home, or a gift card to your family business. Fundraising is one of the most important functions of the PTSA. Not only does the money we raise go towards fun events for our students, but it also pays for some of our beloved staff salaries and many of the unique field trip opportunities that are essential to the Sunnyside curriculum. To learn more about how to get involved, please email the PTSA fundraising chair, Justine Reimnitz (she/her), at justinereimnitz
